Selective laser melting (SLM), often also referred to as 3D metal printing, was developed in the 1990s by engineers at the Fraunhofer Institute. The technology has now found its way into the commercial sector for about 7 years. As the entire process is developing rapidly and thus becoming more and more economical, it could completely replace conventional manufacturing processes in the future.
In the manufacturing process, a laser melts the metal powder layer by layer, thus creating the shape. A wide variety of materials can be processed. Aluminum alloys and tool steel and stainless steel are often used. But also materials such as copper or brass can be easily produced and are used in radiator figures of classic cars from the 30s to 60s. The process is also ideal for lettering or metal holders. After manufacturing and before assembly, they must be post-processed. The surface is blasted with glass beads to smooth it.
